Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel(born 2 March 1989) is an English actress. Emmanuel started her acting career performing in the theatre in the late 1990s. Later she was offered roles in various West End productions including The Lion King. She started her acting career in 2006 , playing Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. After that she was cast on various British TV shows which included the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican, as is her father, who is of half-Saint Lucian and half English descent. She has a younger sister. Emmanuel remembered how her mother was the first person to recognize her love for acting while she attended St Hilda's School. It was closed in 2014. The Westcliff High School For Girls grammar school followed. In an interview with The New York Daily News, she said, "When my mom was three, she was always causing drama. So she decided that maybe I could channel that in a proper way, and so I began learning to act, sing, and dance classes." At the age of 10 she was in Young Nala, the West End's production of The Lion King. Then, she was cast as Missandei in HBO's fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she learned about the character during her work as an assistant in an apparel store. In the year 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to an actor in the series. Missandei, the only notable female character on the show was a black woman. The scene in which she was chained to death was disregarded by the fans. The scene was also criticized as an example fodging and evoking images of slavery. Emmanuel later stated to The Guardian: The response to the passing of Missandei was huge because she was alone. I believe that many people who felt excluded or marginalized had connected with Missandei or felt represented by her. It was incredibly difficult for many to watch her gone, particularly when it happened in the manner that she did. They're going after the only woman of color.
